Actually, you’re probably wondering how I kicked myself into an Onlyinadreamshipping mood. And even before that, you’re probably asking what Onlyinadreamshipping is.
Onlyinadreamshipping is the shipping name (the pairing name, basically) for my Pokémon Fan Character, Kelly, and Ash Ketchum. I abbreviate it as OIAD most of the time.
So how did I “kick” myself into the mood for it? Well, I was thinking about it. Going over their romantic history in my head because sometimes I do that and, whoops, got all excited and cheery over it. When I get in the mood for the shipping (or any shipping, really), it usually means I want to see images of them. Of course, because it’s a fan character/official character pairing, it’s not like I can just go search the Internet for images. I have to either ask people to make them, hope people make them for me, or make them myself.
I REALLY wanted more Onlyinadreamshipping pictures than I had. I had some from other people and a bit on my deviantART. The problem with the ones that were mine were that most of them were a few years old. I decided I really wanted to draw Onlyinadreamshipping pictures. After trying to draw something and giving up halfway through because it looked awkward, I decided to do what I’ve been meaning to do – redraw some of the older images.
It’s pretty dang amazing how they look in comparison to the originals. I’m amazed at my own improvement!
The first image I drew was a new version of the picture entitled “Poke”. I decided to try to make Ash and Kelly more in character, as well as drew them in their Best Wishes outfits instead. I’m pretty satisfied with how Ash came out. If anything, it’s my best drawing of Ash to date! On the hand, I hate how Kelly came out. Particularly her face. It looks too big and her facial expression is hideous. I can hear her yelling at me for drawing an ugly image of her.
I did consider not letting Kelly’s arm wrap around Ash’s stomach, but decided against it.
I also thought up a little scenario for this image as well. Knowing the characters and assuming this is after Kelly and Ash are a couple, Kelly hugs Ash from behind and pokes his cheek with her left hand. He looked at her slightly annoyed, asking “what are you doing”. She teasingly responds “what does it look like I’m doing”. Ash just stares at her blankly, Kelly moves away awkwardly, turning around as if she was going to curl up in a ball. Ash, confused, asks her what’s wrong. She says nothing is wrong and goes to her Pokémon. Ash is left confused and his Pikachu sighs at his stupidity.
After I drew this picture, I pulled up the first version of it on my computer and made a comparison picture. I was extremely surprised to see such a huge improvement between the images. The improvements were more obvious than I thought they would, starting with the faces. They were awkwardly huge in the original version, but in the new one, they’re a good song (well, Ash’s is – I still think Kelly’s head is too huge). The faces aren’t that well drawn either. Actually, everything is well drawn in the recent one when compared to the original. It might be a 100% fair comparison since the outfits are different, but still.
I decided that to continue on drawing OIAD pictures, I was going to work on one that was really important for one of my site layouts. It’s more or less a redraw of an image of Kelly and Ash sitting back to back. I had used the original image as a fanlisting header. The image looks better than some of my far earlier images, but worse than my later ones. I kind of liked the concept and a similar pose would be more or less appropriate for the Onlyaindreamshipping shrine I’m planning for my website.
I am giving it a “shrine” on my website. I’ll let you know when it’s up. I’m doing one for Martinishipping too. I need some place to put all my images of those pairings, regardless of content. But yeah.
With the newer version, I decided to draw it with the Johto saga in mind. I won’t go into detail about it since it contains spoilers for Kelly’s Journey (…though, I have KJ spoilers everywhere so it doesn’t really matter at this point). Anyway, I knew their poses had to be adjusted for the newer version. The idea more or less formed into my head immediately: Kelly looking over her shoulder as if she wanted to look at Ash, looking sad, while Ash would be holding something related to Pokémon catching and looking happy. I went ahead and drew, quite happy that just about everything was being drawn quite smoothly. The first problem was with Ash’s had which took me a few times to draw it well enough for me to be satisfied with it. The second problem was with Kelly’s face. Kelly’s facial expression wasn’t working. It wasn’t looking sad enough nor was her eyes big enough for it to look proper. After trying to draw it with my usual pencil, I pulled out my special one with smaller lead (which works better for smaller details) and managed to nail the look perfectly. I can feel my heart hurting for her, she looks so sad. Honestly, this is probably my favourite image I drew today. Which I’m glad. I’m gonna be staring at it for quite a while when I make that layout.
I switched my focus to other things (mainly Japanese and that comic commission I have to do). After I finished everything I had decided to do (which was after midnight), I went back to doing redraws. I opened up an old journal entry on deviantART about redraw requests. A while ago I asked people what images in my gallery they wanted to see me redraw and I redrew them. I saw one OIAD picture requested from one of my really good friends and decided that, hey, I was going to redraw it.
It was a redraw of an image called “I Want To Be With You”, which I called the redraw “Hug From Behind”. It’s one of the VERY few pictures I’ll draw with Ash actually doing something that contributes to OIAD. I don’t usually like having Ash take the initiative in romantic situations simply because I feel like it’s out of character for him. I feel like he would have to be directed in some sort of way in order for anything to happen. I wouldn’t be surprised if he learned the pose from Kelly or TV or something. Their outfits are pretty random and are based off whatever they were originally wearing in the original image.
I have a few issues with this picture – particularly Kelly’s head and Ash’s hair. I was having trouble though. It still came out much better than the original though, so it’s all right! I actually really Kelly’s hand for some odd reason. It’s one of my better drawn hands, in my opinion.
I kind of wish I designed actual outfits for them. Ash’s is really boring. Kelly’s is plain, but still works fine in this case.
After I completed this, I posted a link to it on Facebook, told my friend who requested me to redraw it, and went back to drawing. I went into the OIAD folder I have on deviantART and picked out one of the images I wanted to draw – “In the Grass…”, which was simply an image of Kelly and Ash sleeping on top of grass. I really liked the drawing in the first place and felt an updated version would be quite good. The poses also weren’t overly complicated, so I knew I could manage it despite I was tired.
I started one version, trying to make their heads slightly turned. However, once I got to their bodies, I decided against the drawing because it just looked extremely awkward. I took a new piece of paper and began drawing.
It’s always weird for me when I start to draw Kelly from a front view. Pokémon has this really…I don’t know what to call it. But the hip angles are REALLY obvious on the female characters and kind of look like if you put the greater than/less than signs like > <…it’s weird. I don’t do that when I’m drawing my story characters or non-Pokémon fan characters, but when it comes to Pokémon, I do so because I’m trying to mimic the style on purpose. It comes out really well in the end, but it still feels odd.
Anyway, I drew an updated version of the outfit Kelly had been wearing in the original image. I didn’t know how the lower half of the outfit looked, so I just gave her shorts instead. Ash’s outfit is still more or less the same. Frankly, I don’t like how Ash came out. His face and hair look really odd to me, particularly younger than he should look.
For some odd reason, this seems to people peoples favourite image. I’ll have to wait until later to see if that stays true, but those who I showed so far seem to love it. Kelly’s outfit seems to stand out in particular. I actually really like Kelly’s outfit too – I’m looking forward to colour it, personally. I hated the colours on the original outfit. Since I know Kelly’s usual clothing colours now, I’ll use those on it instead.
I decided to one more image before I went to bed. I am indeed tired, but I wanted to do one more image. Not a complicated one, of course, since I’m tired. If I attempted something hard, I would have given up. I can also feel my own motivation draining from me. So, I went to redraw another image just to continue on the redrawing spree – a simple one called “Looking Up”. I don’t even remember the original concept of the image, other than Kelly and Ash both blushing and Ash looking upward.
I think the redrawing of the image came out well compared to the previous versions (yes, versions), but I have a HUGE issue with their heads and Ash’s pose. The heads just look awkwardly big and Ash’s pose looks awkward and unnatural.
Once I finished sketching it and scanned it, I decided that I should do a comparison picture for it. Mainly because there’s three versions – the original, the redraw, and the second redraw (this being the second redraw). It’s even more awesome to see because it shows very clear progress in my artwork. I like the 2011 version the best, but I honestly like the head size better in the 2007 version. The original 2004 version is just pure crap, but hey, if I never drew like that, I would have never gotten better!
After I made that and posted it in my scraps on deviantART, I decided to make this journal entry. I’m going to bed after this though. And checking my poll once more.
Thanks for reading~
Sorry for spelling mistakes. I’m too tired to edit this…
