Happy New Years, everybody, whenever I am posting this. I’m not quite done with 2017 yet, despite being 2018 now. I think in the past, I reflected on my goals achieved in my end-of-the-year post, but I didn’t this time. I wanted to give attention to them on their own, so I can appreciate what I have achieved and what I have not.
If you would like to see my goals for the previous years, including 2017, check out the posts below:
Fantastic! Let’s get started!
Re: Overall Goals
For my overall goals for 2017, I was aiming to make my business my number one priority, along with weight loss, balancing my diet, and getting my money under control. The only one I managed to do for 2017 was getting my money under control, but just barely.
TrainerKelly’s Network was pushed to the side for the first half of the year, minus for conventions and a few comics. To be honest, that could not really be helped: I was working a job I hated that took far too much out of me. By the end of the week, I was dragging, and the weekends didn’t quite help either. Even after I left that job and switched to another, I barely produced any content. I did, however, complete my online shop.
I realized pretty early on that weight loss was not important for me and was something I could focus on when the time is more appropriate for me. Happily, I’m maintaining my current weight. I’m fine with that until the future when I know it’s right for me.
Balancing my diet wasn’t something I even remotely started to work on until towards the end of the year when I realized I wasn’t getting enough of a certain vitamin, as it almost never appeared in my food. I decided to take a multivitamin just to be safe and work on upping my intake of food that provides me with all the different nutrients. I’m only at the beginning of that adjustment, so I expect it to take some time.
For my money, an event happened in August 2017 that made me decide that I had enough not taking my money seriously and started to buckle down. It was difficult at first, but I got a handle on my money after a good month or so. I’ll admit that December was extremely bumpy for me, especially after I got my Christmas money. I realized that the temptation to drain all my money was silenced because all my money had a purpose. When I have a bunch of money without purpose, it comes back out…which is not fun. I did open up another bank account to throw that Christmas money into to help keep me under control. I have left 2017 with a bit less money than I had at the beginning of December 2017, but I am not defeated by it. I simply take this as a lesson on saving money and having more control over it. I need to make sure I have enough for emergencies, after all.
To be honest, I don’t quite care that I didn’t achieve everything because I didn’t need to. The fact I even got my money under control is amazing and that I have started to work on balancing my diet. I will let all of you know if I am going to be pursuing all of these goals again, at least in some form, in 2018 a bit later on.
RE: Month-by-Month Goals
Besides from conventions, I didn’t even achieve half of the stuff I set out to do.
I did complete Fairy Glimpse, my one-panel comic for Instagram & Patreon, in January and set it up to post until it ran out. I did work on Fairies’ Day, the 4-panel comic in the first half of the year and finished 12 strips of it completely before the end of the year.
I completed 12 strips of Naitmarians’ Day, another 4-panel comic, before the end of the year.
I started sketching out the next 12 pages of MAKE ME A MODEL, but never finished them. To be honest, I’m not even sure which page I am on right now. All I know is that I really love a couple of them and am excited to share them in the future.
I did a few random sketches here and there, but almost no full-colour illustrations.
I dabbled a few short stories, but I don’t think I completed any of them, at least, not for right now.
I did not post anything new, besides from Fairy Glimpse to finish off what I had written for it. I did not do the 1-panel comic I was planning. I did not complete any significant amount of other work. I did not read my business books (I don’t think so, anyway). I didn’t make the notebooks I wanted to make.
I think it’s pretty fair to say that this year was a failure in terms of these goals and the previous ones. Which…I’m kind of okay with. Nothing much went on this year in general, at least on the outside. On the inside, I can feel the changes, but I won’t discuss them here.
RE: Aim For Achievement
I wanted to achieve every goal this year and stay on top of everything. Clearly, that did not happen. And…that’s okay. I don’t mind. I mean, okay, yeah, it does slightly bother me that the year felt pretty unproductive in terms of content, but that’s okay. I had a lot of growing to do this year, but in a more subtle way. It was almost like this year was a quiet year of growth so I can actually achieve my goals in the future and live my life better.
2017 was an unproductive year for most of my goals. However, with this lack of achievement, I can reflect on what went wrong. Did I set out to do too much? Am I not taking my work seriously? Was there something else going on that distracted me? Or is there something else? If anything, it was all of those. I set out to do too much, I don’t take my work as seriously as I should/want to, other aspects of my life were distracting me (primarily the job I hated taking too much energy and depression), and an accumulation of other things.
I’ll admit I think this year was a lot more internal development than anything else, even though I know my posts do not reflect that. Maybe I’ll share my experiences in the future, but for now, I want to keep quiet, at least in public like this.
I’m kind of curious on how I am going to tackle 2018. I want to say I am excited, but I’m not. I’m not quite sure what to think. The only thing that is on my mind is my girl side wielding a sword and my guy side wielding creative energy, springing into action, representing what 2018 is going to be about.
I will talk to you guys at a later date about my 2018 goals. For now, I am going to rest.
