Before I had a little blurb for each character I had a print of, Cian was my most popular male character. Something about his design must have resonated with people. I found though once I put a blurb, Carwyn become my most popular character. I found some people still liked Cian a lot, however, like one of my friends and my mother.
I call Cian my “depressed vampire”. He was lying on his deathbed when he was approached by a member of the vampire council and asked if he would like to become a vampire. Cian, who had been sick since birth and never truly experienced life, agreed to it. He felt alive for the first time in his life, but that novelty faded after a month simply because he had nothing he had ever wanted to do in life. The realization that he wasn’t going to be dead-dead unless someone killed him hit him not too long after and he became depressed. He spends most of his time writing in journals Hadley provides for him, deep in thought.
I think Cian is actually very cute. I can see why a lot of people were drawn in by his design.
For this piece, I was trying to capture him being depressed. I wanted him to look sad. I knew I wanted the background to be black to further emphasize that he was not happy. I think I managed to achieve that in this piece.
This was part of a set of 3 options for convention prints of Cian and this one is the one that won. I think this one was definitely a great choice – it’s simple. It made it easier on me to do. However, this is not my favourite one in the set.
That would be “Cian’s Death Wish”.
