Please Note: If you have no idea what I am referring to, please move along; this post is NOT for you! This post is for the current readership of Kelly’s Journey. Thank you!
Hello Kelly’s Journey fans! I am so glad that you are here to join me. I know the series has experienced a long silence. While I am absolutely pleased to say that it is definitely continuing, I am sorry to say that I had to reverse “absolutes” I have been saying.
For those who don’t care for a lot of details, but just want to know the basics, here is the rundown:
- my goal is to get up to episode 30 this year for new episodes and rewrite/edit from episode 1 to 30; I have up to episode 25 completely written, am working on episode 26, and have episodes 1 and 2 rewritten so far
- I originally said I would post up the KJ episodes this year, regardless of the status, but I am revoking that statement; KJ episodes will be posted April 1st, 2017 (aiming to, at least) on the Pokémon TV series 20th anniversary
- I am focusing on many other things this year, including original works
- Right now I am trying to focus on getting obligations out of the way so I can focus on Kelly’s Journey and my original works
Hopefully that’s good enough for those of you who want the short version. If you don’t mind a longer discussion, continue on!
I’m actually kind of embarrassed to say that the last episode of Kelly’s Journey to be posted online was episode 16 way back in Summer 2013! It has been nearly 3 years since then. It was also then I had gotten this awesome idea to write enough episodes to queue them up and post them once a month! Well, the new episodes, at least; I also got this grand idea to rewrite the earlier episodes, after painfully trying to read episode 3 of Kelly’s Journey. Needless to say…that was more embarrassing than not posting an episode for 3 years.
I kept hoping to post Kelly’s Journey episodes in 2014 and 2015, but I kept falling behind. Instead, however, I inched through writing brand new episodes. As of May 5th, 2016, I am on episode 26 and my goal episode to reach is 30. I’m close! Not close enough, but still…pretty dang close!
I eventually settled on mid-2016 as a posting date. It was far enough away where I could take my time and not overwhelm myself, but close enough to not be a ridiculously long time away from posting. I really thought I might be able to make my goal, at least writing to episode 30!
Of course, as life does, things kept popping up. 2014 was an intense year and left off on an intense note. 2015 was just awful until the end. This year, so far, has experienced ups and downs that I would liken to a bumpy airplane ride. I’m going to be fine and I’m excited for this entire year, but I also acknowledge I’m not off the plane yet!
Being in 2016 has made it very clear to me that I wouldn’t get my goals for Kelly’s Journey completed in time for my original goal. However, it is becoming clear to me that this is the first time I have EVER felt like I could complete my goals spread over the year…even if I had a late start.
I think before I talk about the New Goal, I want to talk about the factors that influenced this change. I’m sure though if you read my 2016 goal post, you might be able to get a good idea of why the shift is occurring. You may also want to check out my 2016 posts so far to get a better idea of what I have been doing. Heck, go read my December 2015 posts while you’re at it! All of them will give you a good idea of what I have been up to!
I signed up for a convention called YourMiniCon back in June or July 2015 and attended it at the beginning of this year. Since YourMiniCon, I’ve been planning, brainstorming, and executing ideas related to my characters that I debuted at the convention. I already knew I was missing the key component of published stories to really draw people in, but I also knew I didn’t have a chance to sit down and do it before. Heck, the characters introduced at the convention didn’t even have stories until pretty recently and I just keep learning new things about them.
On top of the debuted characters, I’ve also had TWO comics that have been scripted way back in 2012, but only pretty recently was storyboarded. I’m aiming to launch both of them in July 2016. One is a fan comic and one is an original comic.
On the more mundane side of things, thanks to the conventions I had/have been going to, I ended up with a bunch of commissions that I am just now trying to tackle head on. I still have commissions from the end of last year to complete.
…you can probably see why Kelly’s Journey is being delayed, alongside some of the other goals that I am looking forward to. Right now the more mundane side of things is pretty important for me to finish. I know that my business goals are SUPER important to me, which is exactly why I am trying to get the mundane stuff out of the way first. Get the stuff I don’t want to do out of the way so I can actually focus on what really matters to me in the end.
NOW, the New Goal for Kelly’s Journey is to have everything I would like to do for it completed by April 1st, 2017 on the 20th anniversary of the Pokémon TV series in Japan. This includes a lot of aspects of the project of Kelly’s Journey. I know a tiny part of me inside is trying to convince me I won’t even get there in time; however, I have a much larger part that is calm and letting me that I WILL finish it in time. I’m going to finish everything I aim to do, including beyond Kelly’s Journey.
For Kelly’s Journey, my primary goals are:
– completing up to episode 30
– editing/rewriting (where applicable) episodes 1 through 30
– drawing Kelly’s Journey related comics that help to string together episodes and flesh out the world
– Kelly’s Journey website
Even though I wanted to work on all of this in the first half of the year, I keep getting this will all be in the second half. This first half is focused on getting crap done that is important in the most mundane sense. Yes, some of the stuff that matters more to me WILL be worked on, but the second half is the pickup.
If…that makes sense?
Actually, to be honest, just writing this blog entry is making my mind go a million miles a minute, which is something that doesn’t happen to me too often anymore. Okay, time to focus again!
The New Goal Break Down
I’m really feeling that I’m going to spend the next few months completing up to episode 30 and working on the editing/rewrites (which really shouldn’t take too long; seriously, though, even the rewrites are easy because I’m basically taking the original episodes, which are fine, and fleshing them out to make them cleaner and clearer and make more sense).
The comics should come shortly after these completed episodes (which I expect to be done within one to four months), which I also expect, assuming nothing else gets in my way and I am in a good workflow, should be completed in a sufficient amount of time.
The Kelly’s Journey website will be completed in the early half of 2017. Which, to be completely honest, is achievable because I normally finish a website within a week as long as I don’t have ten billion pieces of artwork to drag it out.
While there are MANY more things I want to do with Kelly’s Journey, these are the focus and I believe I can make them happen and they are achievable.
I will try to keep you guys updated as I make progress. Let’s make this happen!!
Thank you SO much for your support. I really appreciate it. I really do!
