When I first set out to work on my blog, I was extremely insistent on actually making the blog myself. Originally, I was going to do my blog last, but I decided to follow a different feeling and decided to work on the blog second. I thought it was a great idea at the time, since I knew it would take me a while to make the blog layout.
I wish I had just followed my original plan though and did my blog layout last.
I spent a few months trying to follow a WordPress tutorial, failed it (the layout wasn’t showing at all and I accidentally deleted the entire thing…oops), and when I thought I got the hang of it, I began to freak out.
“I can’t do this!” was my internal cry. My brain began to get jumbled like a stack of blocks being knocked down. I didn’t know what to do. I really wanted a magazine-style layout for my blog and I wanted to make it myself…but how?! My knowledge of HTML and CSS is basic at the most and PHP, while I kind of get it now, is still way out of my league.
Maybe I should find a different tutorial? Maybe I should just pay someone to do it? I didn’t know what to do!
After some internal freaking out and some cooking-food later, I decided that the best decision would be to use one of the pre-made WordPress layouts that were in a magazine style. Okay, sure, they wouldn’t be exactly what I wanted, but I’m sure they would do…hopefully.
I ended up going with one called Magazine Basic, which seemed to have the closest layout to what I wanted. It’s still not exactly what I wanted, but after playing around with it, I got something satisfying.
I did end up having to go into the actually CSS to change a few things (particularly the navigation bar, which was set as a dark gray by default and didn’t let me change it in the “Appearance” menu) and plan on doing a few more tweaks in the future with the layout to get it to more of what I want for my own layout.
Even though I have “given up” for now, I have only retreated. I feel if I want to actually make a WordPress layout, I have to sit down and become serious in studying web design (which, for myself, is learning/refreshing/etc. each piece of HTML & CSS I know and learning PHP, etc. from the ground up). I do not feel like I have the time or desire to do this right now, so the best decision was to take a pre-made layout and modify it to my needs with my limited knowledge.
I need this blog up and I need my website to head towards its final stages. I can’t just keep trying to make something forever that I may never get around to. I have to move forward. In order to move forward, I have to do what I can do now and save the sparkly dreams for another time.
I am not giving up on a layout completely made by me. I’m just putting the dream into storage until I have the chance to actually do so.
So, for now, enjoy my slightly-slightly-slightly modified Magazine Basic layout. Keep a look out for future changes.
