Most of the images in my back catalog were from 2011 or 2012. However, I had, I believe, two from 2010 sneak into my pile of “to do” images. This was one of them. I believe I drew it shortly after Best Wishes! (Black & White) started airing in Japan, but I could be wrong about that. It’s also one of three Isshu (Unova) kisses I’d be drawing over the next three or so years.
I honestly thought this picture was from 2011, not 2010. Granted, it’s from near the end of 2010, so that might be why. It’s drawn pretty well considering the year it was sketched in. Kelly’s face – actually, her entire body – looks weird, but that’s okay. I like how Ash was drawn.
I think the inspiration for this image was some other artwork. I think it might have been an Ash/May image, but it could have been someone else’s Ash/Fan Character picture. I can’t remember. It’s a pretty generic concept though, taking Ash’s hat and using it to hide a kiss. Mine looks different from the other ones I’ve seen though, so you can tell it’s inspired and not a rip off. Most of them actually show the hat hiding the kiss, not the kiss itself.
The coloured version’s pretty good. It continued me trying to practice Pokémon-like backgrounds, which fail in all aspects, but are starting to look more like backgrounds. The tree trunks especially fail.
I feel that the coloured version improved certain aspects of the image, as well as ruined other ones. For instance I think Ash’s face looked better in the sketch. I think Kelly looks better overall in colour though. I sort of like their hands better too in colour, since the lineart helped them look better in size.
I think this might have been around the time where I realized I could actually finally draw Ash well. Thank you Ash’s redesign!
Original sketch is from 2010, image finished in 2013.
