This was the winning picture out of three I sketched of Seirian.
Seirian is a witch from Naitmaric. She’s known for being sporty and spends a lot of time hanging out in trees. She’s super chill and laidback, except when you compete against her – she goes hard. She has an awkward sense of humour and tends to make jokes at the wrong place at the wrong time and no one thinks it’s funny but her, but she doesn’t catch onto the fact no one thinks it’s funny.
For this piece, I wanted to show Seirian hanging out in a tree. I knew enough about her character to know that she spends quite a bit of her time doing stuff like this, so I thought it would make a good piece. While I prefer a different piece of her (her bust shot), I do like this one overall.
I’m really happy with the finished product. I think Seirian looks super cool here. I remember someone at a convention commenting on the lighter bits looked like the moonlight coming through the trees. I admitted that wasn’t on purpose and they were like “we call those ‘happy accidents'”. They really loved what I did.
Also, I distinctly remember at two separate conventions, two different black guys waltzed up to my table, gave me money for this print, and left. It was done in the same exact way both times. It was a super swift transaction and I just…it was almost like deja vu when it happened. I always remember that whenever I see this picture. It was an interesting experience.
I’ll have to admit, I had some reservations posting up Seirian, as well as some of my other witch characters, especially those who are female or are female-presenting. I still have some trauma lingering around from several years ago that these characters remind me of, so it makes me hesitant to post them. However, a few things inspire me to lift up my head and post them anyway:
- these characters are not shelved or scrapped – they are actively apart of my universe. I would have to share them at some point;
- there is nothing wrong with these characters and my fears extend from opinions of others;
- healing for myself. I’m sick of fear controlling my actions. The fear I am feeling is not helpful fear (such as keeping away from the edge of cliff), but rather detrimental that threatens to pause the stories I need to tell;
I like Seirian’s character, even if she is just chill and laid back.
